Junior Doctors in England Announce Five-Day Strike from June 27 to July 2 Ahead of General Election
May 29, 2024, 10:37 AM
Junior doctors in England have announced a five-day strike from 7am on June 27 to 7am on July 2, just days before the general election on July 4. The strike is part of a long-running dispute over pay between the British Medical Association (BMA) and the Conservative government. This decision follows three months of failed mediation talks. The timing of the strike is seen as an attempt to maximize its impact on the election campaign. Health Secretary Victoria Atkins has called on the Labour Party to condemn the strike, while Labour leaders have stated they cannot meet the doctors' pay demands. BMA junior doctors committee co-chairmen Dr Robert Laurenson and Dr Vivek Trivedi have been vocal about the pay issues.
