Hydrothermal Explosion at Yellowstone's Biscuit Basin Near Old Faithful Causes Damage, No Injuries

An unusually large hydrothermal explosion occurred at Biscuit Basin in Yellowstone National Park on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at around 10 a.m. The explosion, which took place near Sapphire Pool and Old Faithful, sent boiling water, rocks, and debris into the air, damaging a nearby boardwalk and causing tourists to run for safety. Despite the dramatic nature of the event, no injuries were reported. The area has been temporarily closed for safety reasons. The US Geological Survey (USGS) has stated that volcanic activity remains at background levels and this event does not indicate increased seismic activity in the region.
