Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori Dies at 86 in Lima After Battle with Cancer
Sep 12, 2024, 01:45 AM
Alberto Fujimori, former president of Peru, has died at the age of 86 in Lima. Fujimori, who served as president from 1990 to 2000, was known for his authoritarian rule and significant economic reforms. He played a crucial role in defeating Maoist rebels and curbing hyperinflation. However, his tenure was marred by human rights abuses, including the killings of 25 people in two separate massacres in 1991 and 1992. Fujimori, of Japanese descent, was convicted of these crimes and sentenced to 25 years in prison, although he was released in December 2023 on a humanitarian pardon after serving 16 years. His death was confirmed by his daughter, Keiko Fujimori, who mentioned that he had been battling cancer.
