Ohtani and Betts Tie Game 1; Fan Interference Denies Torres' Homer
Oct 26, 2024, 02:49 AM
In Game 1 of the 2024 World Series at Dodger Stadium, the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied to tie the game against the New York Yankees in the bottom of the eighth inning. Shohei Ohtani hit a double off the right-field wall, narrowly missing a home run for his first career World Series hit. Ohtani advanced to third base when Yankees infielder Gleyber Torres mishandled the relay throw. Mookie Betts then delivered a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Ohtani and leveling the score at 2-2. In the top of the ninth inning, Torres hit a deep fly ball that was interfered with by a Dodgers fan reaching over the wall, evoking comparisons to the infamous Jeffrey Maier incident. The umpires ruled fan interference, awarding Torres a double instead of a potential go-ahead home run.
