NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban Resigns Amid Federal Corruption Probe; Tom Donlon Named Interim
Sep 13, 2024, 11:44 AM
New York City Police Commissioner Edward Caban has resigned amid a federal corruption investigation. The resignation comes a week after federal agents seized his phone. Caban had served as commissioner for 15 months. The investigation involves allegations of corruption within the NYPD and connections to Caban’s twin brother, James Caban, who is accused of attempting to extort a Brooklyn bar owner. Mayor Eric Adams has appointed Tom Donlon as the interim NYPD commissioner. Donlon, a former FBI official, is expected to restore the department’s image. The scandal has also led to the firing of a mayoral staffer, Ray Martin, who allegedly facilitated the extortion attempt. Just before his resignation, Caban released a new disciplinary matrix that lowered penalties for certain police offenses.
