Jun 28, 2024, 11:43 PM
Iran's former president Hassan Rouhani has endorsed reformist candidate Masoud Pezeshkian in the upcoming presidential election. Pezeshkian, who has reiterated his commitment to Supreme Leader Khamenei's plans, is currently leading in the polls. Private Republican Guard polling shows Pezeshkian with a clear lead, and unofficial figures indicate he has 42.6% of the votes, followed by hardline contender Saeed Jalili with 38.8%. If these figures remain unchanged, a runoff election will be held on July 5. Preliminary vote counts show Pezeshkian with 43% of the votes, Jalili with 38%, and Bagher Ghalibaf with 15%. Official counts from the Interior Ministry indicate Pezeshkian leading with 2,410,760 votes, followed closely by Jalili with 2,408,079 votes. The turnout is around 40 percent, the lowest in the history of the Islamic Republic.
