Dearica Hamby Sues WNBA and Aces Alleging Pregnancy Discrimination, Retaliation, and Intimidation
Aug 12, 2024, 10:20 PM
Dearica Hamby, a former player for the Las Vegas Aces and current Los Angeles Sparks forward, has filed a federal lawsuit against the WNBA and her former team. The lawsuit alleges that Hamby faced repeated acts of intimidation, discrimination, and retaliation due to her pregnancy. The legal action claims that these actions culminated in January 2023 when the Aces traded her to the Sparks. Hamby had signed a contract extension with the Aces in June 2022. The lawsuit also mentions that she was forced to vacate team-provided housing and that Aces players and staff were instructed to cease communication with her. Additionally, Hamby had filed a complaint with the EEOC last year and was awarded a "right to sue." The lawsuit also claims the Aces allegedly promised to cover her daughter's private school tuition as part of her free agency agreement. The WNBA has acknowledged the lawsuit and stated that they are reviewing the complaint.
