Kolkata Doctor's Murder Sparks Nationwide Strike, CBI Investigation Considered
Aug 12, 2024, 03:36 AM
The recent rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, who had over 11 injury marks on her body, has sparked widespread protests and strikes across India. The Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA) has announced a nationwide strike, halting elective services in hospitals, demanding justice for the victim. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has also demanded a swift investigation within 48 hours, with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee advocating for a fast-track trial and the death penalty for the accused. A CBI investigation is being considered, and the BJP has appealed for its intervention. The incident has led to protests by medical professionals, including a candle march by the AIIMS Resident Doctors' Association in Delhi. Three junior doctors and a housekeeping staff have been summoned by Kolkata police for questioning. The principal of RG Kar Medical College, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, has resigned amid the controversy, citing defamation on social media.
