UN Unanimously Extends Sudan Sanctions with Resolution 2750 Amid Darfur Violence
Sep 11, 2024, 03:58 PM
The United Nations Security Council has unanimously adopted resolution 2750 to extend the sanctions regime against Sudan, including an arms embargo, asset freezes, and travel bans, until September 2025. All 15 Council members voted in favor. The decision comes amid ongoing violence in Sudan's Darfur region, where both the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have been implicated in obtaining and using foreign-made weapons, such as armed drones and anti-tank guided missiles. Human Rights Watch has revealed that these warring parties are posting photos and videos of their new military kits online. The sanctions aim to curb the flow of arms into the conflict-ridden region, which has seen a resurgence of violence reminiscent of the genocide that occurred two decades ago. Despite the sanctions, experts have noted that violations, including by the UAE, continue to occur. Reporting from Sudan remains challenging due to safety risks for journalists and activists, but significant evidence has been verified online.
