Stampede at Religious Event in Uttar Pradesh Kills Over 116
Jul 2, 2024, 01:50 PM
At least 116 people have been killed in a stampede during a Hindu religious event in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The incident occurred on Tuesday in Mughalgarhi village of Hathras district, where thousands of devotees had gathered for a satsang. The death toll has been rising rapidly, with many of the deceased being women and children, reaching as high as 107 and later 130. Over 150 people have been hospitalized with injuries. Authorities are investigating the cause of the stampede, with initial reports suggesting that the rush to receive blessings from a self-proclaimed godman and the sweltering heat and humidity may have contributed to the tragedy. This incident marks one of the worst such tragedies in India in recent years.
