U.S. Treasury Hacked by Chinese APT Actor via BeyondTrust, China Denies Claims
Dec 31, 2024, 03:17 PM
The U.S. Treasury Department disclosed that it was the target of a cyberattack attributed to a Chinese state-sponsored Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) actor. The breach, which occurred earlier this month, involved the compromise of a third-party software service provider, BeyondTrust, allowing the hackers to remotely access certain Treasury workstations and unclassified documents. The Treasury Department has since taken the compromised service offline and is collaborating with the FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) to assess the impact of the intrusion. China has denied any involvement in the cyberattack, labeling the accusations as 'groundless' and expressing opposition to all forms of hacking.
