U.S. Charges Russian Officials Over 'WhisperGate' Cyber Attacks on Ukraine and NATO
Sep 5, 2024, 05:15 PM
The U.S. has charged five Russian GRU officers and one civilian with conspiring to hack the Ukrainian government and its allies. These cyber attacks, conducted in advance of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, also targeted 26 NATO countries. Unit 29155 of Russia's GRU, known for coup attempts and assassinations, has expanded its operations to include hacking. Estonia, along with other NATO and EU members, was hit by these attacks. The NSA, FBI, and CISA have issued a cybersecurity advisory about Russian military cyber actors. The NSA is also working with AI makers to prevent future attacks. The indictment is part of the 'WhisperGate' conspiracy, involving espionage and sabotage.
