Syria to Boost Electricity by 50% with 800 Megawatts from Turkish and Qatari Ships Amid U.S. Sanctions Waiver
Jan 7, 2025, 11:53 AM
Syria is set to receive two electricity-generating ships from Turkey and Qatar, which will provide a total of 800 megawatts of electricity. This initiative aims to address the severe energy shortages in the country, where state-supplied electricity is currently available for only two or three hours a day. The ships are expected to increase the electricity supply by approximately 50%, according to the Director General of the General Organisation for Electricity Transmission and Distribution, Khaled Abu Dey. The move comes after the U.S. issued a six-month sanctions waiver allowing transactions with Syrian governmental institutions to boost humanitarian assistance, including some energy transactions.
