The U.S. Commerce Department is considering new regulations to restrict or ban drones manufactured in China, citing national security concerns and acute threats posed by foreign adversaries. The proposed rules aim to safeguard the unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) supply chain from potential risks, particularly from China and Russia. The department has invited public feedback on the proposed measures until March 4, 2025. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo described the initiative as a critical step in protecting U.S. national security. The rules, if implemented, could impact major Chinese drone manufacturers like DJI, which dominates the U.S. commercial drone market and has been designated as a national security threat. The final decision on these regulations will be made by the incoming Trump administration, which takes office on January 20, 2025.
