U.S. Coast Guard Begins Hearing on June 2023 Titan Submersible Implosion Killing Five

The U.S. Coast Guard has commenced a two-week public hearing to investigate the June 2023 implosion of the Titan submersible, which resulted in the deaths of all five people on board. The hearing aims to uncover the facts surrounding the incident and develop recommendations to prevent similar tragedies in the future. Former OceanGate employees, including the former lead engineer Tony Nissen, are expected to testify. Nissen revealed he felt pressured to get the submersible ready for dives despite safety concerns. The hearing has also disclosed that the Titan's hull was never subject to third-party checks and that the submersible experienced over 100 equipment issues in the two years leading up to the disaster. A visual re-creation of the journey showed that one of the last messages from the crew was 'all good here' before the vessel imploded. Newly released images reveal the wreckage of the Titan resting on the seabed, just 1,600 feet from the Titanic's bow. The final text from the crew was sent on June 18, 2023, and the hearing will hear from 24 expert witnesses.
