UN General Assembly Demands Russia Withdraw from Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant in July 11 Vote
Jul 12, 2024, 03:39 AM
The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a resolution on July 11 demanding that Russia urgently withdraw its military and other unauthorized personnel from Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and return it to full Ukrainian control. The resolution, titled 'Safety and Security of Ukraine's Nuclear Facilities, including the Zaporizhzhia NPP,' was initiated by Ukraine and condemns Russian aggression against the country. It also calls for Russia to immediately cease its aggression. The vote saw 99 countries in favor, 60 abstentions, and opposition from Belarus, Burundi, Cuba, North Korea, Eritrea, Mali, Russia, Nicaragua, and Syria. India was among the countries that abstained from the vote. This step is seen as a move toward restoring respect for the UN Charter and international law.
