Activists Spray '1.5 Is Dead' on Darwin's Grave at Westminster Abbey
Jan 13, 2025, 01:23 PM
Just Stop Oil activists have defaced Charles Darwin's grave inside Westminster Abbey in London, using spray chalk to protest climate change after the world surpassed the 1.5 degrees Celsius global warming limit. Two women, Alyson Lee, 66, and Di Bligh, 77, sprayed orange powdered paint on Darwin's marble headstone around 9:30 am on Monday morning, writing the message "1.5 is dead!" The Metropolitan Police arrested the activists on suspicion of causing criminal damage. The protest follows news that the Earth's temperature has exceeded the "safe" 1.5-degree warming limit agreed upon by world leaders. The activists called for the UK government to work with other nations to phase out the extraction and burning of fossil fuels by 2030.
