House Passes Thomas R. Carper Water Resources Act with 399-18 Vote

The U.S. House of Representatives has passed the Thomas R. Carper Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) of 2024 with overwhelming bipartisan support, in a 399-18 vote. The legislation aims to enhance the nation's water infrastructure, improve ports, harbors, and inland waterways, and protect communities from flooding. Key provisions include $100 million to boost the supply of clean drinking water for Riverside County, $45 million for Orange County water supply improvements, and over $20 million for local water and infrastructure projects in various districts. The act authorizes the repair of the New Savannah Bluff Lock and Dam, requiring the pool level to be maintained at 114.5 feet, and includes authorization for beach renourishment projects in Pinellas County, Florida. It also provides $60 million in environmental infrastructure improvements for Manhattan and over $50 million for Central Coast water infrastructure projects. The WRDA supports the Western Everglades Restoration Plan and includes a sea level rise study in the San Francisco Bay Area. Additionally, the act incorporates the LAKES Act and a provision to add Wyoming County to the Northern Border Regional Commission. The bill now awaits Senate approval and the President's signature to become law.
