Biden Signs Law Requiring ByteDance to Divest from TikTok by 2025 or Face US Ban in 8 Months
May 20, 2024, 10:11 AM
President Biden signed a law requiring TikTok’s China-based parent company, ByteDance, to divest from the platform by January 19, 2025, or face a ban in the US. The law has prompted TikTok, ByteDance, and a group of TikTok content creators to seek a fast-track suit over the divest-or-ban law. Eight influential TikTok users have also sued the US government. The Department of Justice (DOJ) and ByteDance have filed a joint motion proposing a schedule for the court's ruling, with opening briefs in June, the DOJ's response in July, and arguments in September. They have asked the court to rule on their proposed schedule by May 31. The US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia has been asked to rule by December 6 to allow for a potential Supreme Court review before the deadline. The deadline for a possible TikTok ban is 8 months from today.
