The Supreme Court of India has taken suo motu cognisance of controversial remarks made by a Karnataka High Court judge, Justice Vedavyasachar Srishananda, against a woman lawyer, based on social media reports and a video clip. A five-judge bench, led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, has asked the Karnataka High Court to submit a report on the incident. The bench emphasized the need for judges to exercise restraint and suggested the establishment of a standard operating procedure (SOP) for judicial conduct. The remarks, which referred to a Muslim-dominated locality in Bengaluru as 'Pakistan', have been widely criticized. The Supreme Court has also involved the Attorney General in the matter and scheduled a hearing for the suo motu plea on Wednesday.
