Sugar Bowl Between Georgia and Notre Dame Postponed to Thursday with Super Bowl-Level Security After Attack Kills 15 in New Orleans
Jan 2, 2025, 03:43 PM
The Sugar Bowl, a College Football Playoff quarterfinal between Georgia and Notre Dame, was postponed to Thursday at 4 p.m. ET following a terror attack in New Orleans on Wednesday morning. The attack, carried out by 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, an Army veteran and ISIS sympathizer, resulted in at least 15 deaths and over 30 injuries when he drove a truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street. Despite the tragedy, New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick assured that the city would host the game at the Caesars Superdome with heightened security measures comparable to those used for the Super Bowl. Kirkpatrick mentioned that 'absolutely hundreds of officers' would be deployed to ensure safety around the event. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry expressed confidence in the city's ability to host the game securely, stating that the Superdome was completely secure. The game's postponement and the subsequent security measures reflect the city's effort to balance public safety with the continuation of major events.
