House Passes Social Security Fairness Act to Repeal WEP, GPO
Nov 16, 2024, 06:30 PM
The U.S. House of Representatives has passed the Social Security Fairness Act, a bill aimed at expanding Social Security benefits for certain groups of workers. This legislation, supported by Representatives Garret Graves, Abigail Spanberger, John Larson, Seth Magaziner, Mark DeSaulnier, and Mike Quigley, seeks to repeal the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO), which currently reduce benefits for workers who are also eligible for pensions from jobs not covered by Social Security. Advocates for police officers, firefighters, educators, federal employees, and other public sector workers back the measure. The Act would eliminate provisions that have been in place for decades, which reduce Social Security payments to retirees who also collect pensions from non-Social Security covered employment. The bill now awaits action in the Senate.
