First U.S. Tornado of 2025 Hits Near Shingletown, California; NWS Issues Warnings
Jan 4, 2025, 01:39 AM
A tornado touched down in Northern California on Friday evening, prompting the National Weather Service to issue warnings for Shingletown, Manton, Paynes Creek, Lake California, and Bend in Tehama and Shasta counties until 6:00 PM PST. The tornado, the first confirmed in the United States in 2025, was observed near Paynes Creek, approximately 11 miles southwest of Shingletown and near Red Bluff. It was captured on live cameras, including a fire camera and ALERTCalifornia's Inks Ridge camera. The National Weather Service warned of quarter-size hail accompanying the tornado and advised residents to seek shelter immediately. The phenomenon occurred as a supercell with snow moved through the region. Tornadoes are not uncommon in the northern Central Valley of California, particularly during winter storm systems.
