VisitTrump Nominates Latina Oregon Rep. Chavez-DeRemer as Labor Secretary
Nov 23, 2024, 12:48 AM
President-elect Donald Trump has announced his intention to nominate Republican Congresswoman Lori Chavez-DeRemer of Oregon as Secretary of Labor. Chavez-DeRemer, a Latina who narrowly lost her bid for re-election this month, has been recognized for her efforts in bridging business and labor interests to strengthen the U.S. workforce. She is notable for being one of three Republican members of Congress to co-sponsor the PRO Act, a sweeping labor law reform bill, and has received strong support following heavy lobbying from labor unions such as the Teamsters. Trump's selection of Chavez-DeRemer marks an unusual nod toward the labor movement and is considered one of the most pro-union picks by a Republican president in history. The nomination requires Senate confirmation. In his announcement, Trump stated, "Lori has worked tirelessly with both Business and Labor to build America's workforce, and support the hardworking men and women of America. I look forward to working with her to create tremendous opportunity for American workers, to expand training and apprenticeships, to grow wages and improve working conditions."
