Texas Fans Throw Debris, Pass Interference Overturned in Game vs. Georgia; SEC to Review
Oct 20, 2024, 02:40 AM
With 3:12 remaining in the third quarter of the football game between Texas and Georgia on October 20, 2024, Texas defensive back Jahdae Barron intercepted a pass, seemingly shifting momentum in favor of the Longhorns. However, a flag was thrown for defensive pass interference, a non-reviewable penalty, nullifying the interception. In protest, Texas fans expressed their frustration by throwing water bottles and beer cans onto the field, causing a significant delay. Head coach Steve Sarkisian went onto the field to calm the crowd. After an extended discussion among officials, the pass interference call was controversially overturned. Texas capitalized on the reversal by scoring a touchdown two plays later, narrowing the score. The Southeastern Conference (SEC) later issued a statement explaining that the officials conferred and determined the initial call was incorrect. The SEC also noted that the fans' behavior, including throwing debris onto the field, would be subject to review.
