U.S. DOT Allocates Nearly $2 Billion for Chicago's Red Line Extension Project
Jan 10, 2025, 06:54 PM
The U.S. Department of Transportation has allocated nearly $2 billion for the Chicago Transit Authority's (CTA) Red Line Extension Project, marking a significant step forward in improving transit access on the city's South Side. The project, which extends the Red Line by 5.5 miles from 95th Street to 130th Street, will include four new ADA accessible stations, bus, bike, pedestrian, and park-and-ride facilities, as well as a railcar storage yard and maintenance facility. The initiative is expected to create over 25,000 jobs in Cook County and generate $1.7 billion in real estate activity by 2040. The project aims to address longstanding racial inequities in transit access and stimulate economic development in predominantly Black and disadvantaged neighborhoods.
