VisitBiden Administration to Propose Ban on Chinese, Russian Hardware and Software in Connected Vehicles Over Spying Fears
Sep 23, 2024, 07:55 AM
The U.S. Commerce Department, under the Biden administration, is set to propose new rules that would ban Chinese- and Russian-made hardware and software in connected and autonomous vehicles on American roads. The proposed regulations, expected to be revealed as soon as Monday, are driven by national security concerns, particularly fears over data collection, potential spying, and manipulation of vehicle systems. The ban would effectively bar nearly all Chinese-made cars from the U.S. market. The phased-in regulations would see the software ban take effect for 2027 model year cars and the hardware ban for 2030 model year cars. The move has drawn criticism from Chinese experts who argue it will disrupt the global auto industry supply chain, including U.S. companies.
