China Anchors Largest Coast Guard Ship at Escoda Shoal in Philippine Waters
Jul 6, 2024, 10:45 AM
China's largest coast guard ship, the 165-meter CCG-5901, has anchored within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone (EEZ) in the South China Sea. The vessel, referred to as a 'monster ship', entered Manila's 200-nautical mile EEZ on July 2 and is currently positioned 800 yards from a Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) vessel at Escoda Shoal. The Philippine Coast Guard has expressed concerns that the presence of the Chinese vessel is intended to intimidate the Philippines. This development comes as the United States withdraws a missile-defense system from the Philippines in an effort to ease tensions with China. The ship has been at Escoda Shoal since July 3 and is near the Philippine vessel Teresa Magbanua at Sabina Shoal.
