Riley Cornelio Leads Class Action Against NCAA Over P5 Scholarship Restrictions
Aug 7, 2024, 07:27 PM
A new antitrust class action lawsuit has been filed against the NCAA, targeting its restrictions on athletic scholarships. The lawsuit, filed in a Colorado federal court, seeks damages for Power 5 (P5) athletes who were on partial scholarships and aims to challenge NCAA rules that limit the number of scholarships by sport. Former college baseball pitcher Riley Cornelio is among the plaintiffs, claiming that these restrictions forced some players to pay more for their education. This legal action follows a $2.8 billion settlement related to name, image, and likeness (NIL) compensation, which had previously led to the elimination of the NCAA's cap on scholarships for most sports. However, the new lawsuit argues that the damage to athletes who competed under the cap remains unaddressed. The same attorney involved in the Fontenot case is representing the plaintiffs.
