Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina Resigns and Flees Country Amid Violent Protests, 300 Fatalities
Aug 5, 2024, 10:09 AM
Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned and fled the country amid widespread anti-government protests. The protests, which have turned violent, saw thousands of demonstrators storm her official residence, Ganabhaban, in Dhaka. Reports indicate that Hasina, along with her sister, left the country aboard a military helicopter bound for India. The unrest, which has been described as some of the worst violence in Bangladesh's history, has resulted in over 300 fatalities, including at least 95 people. The resignation marks the end of Hasina's 15-year tenure as prime minister. The military is expected to address the nation soon.
