Israel and Lebanon Near Ceasefire Agreement to End Hostilities with Hezbollah, Implement UN Resolution 1701
Oct 29, 2024, 06:44 PM
Israeli officials are reportedly close to reaching a ceasefire agreement with Lebanon, aimed at ending hostilities with Hezbollah. The proposed deal, spearheaded by Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, includes several key provisions. The Lebanese army will dismantle Hezbollah’s remaining infrastructure up to the Litani River, with Israeli forces remaining in Lebanon until this process is completed. Additionally, the agreement calls for an improved version of UN Resolution 1701, which will require Hezbollah fighters to withdraw north of the Litani River. The ceasefire plan also includes bolstering the Lebanese army and UNIFIL’s presence in southern Lebanon. Another Israeli demand is for a presence on the Lebanon-Syria border to prevent Iran from smuggling weapons into Lebanon. There will also be a 60 day adjustment period wherein the IDF will remain in some spots in the country and leave others.
