Kenya's President Ruto Visits Port-au-Prince, Announces 600 More Officers for Haiti Mission
Sep 22, 2024, 04:00 AM
Kenyan President William Ruto has arrived in Port-au-Prince, Haiti for his first official visit, where he will meet with Kenyan police troops deployed under the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS). Ruto's visit comes 100 days after flagging off the Kenyan police contingent and ahead of the UN General Assembly meeting in New York next week, where he is expected to defend the MSS mission, whose mandate is up for renewal in October. Ruto has expressed openness to converting the Kenya-led anti-gang mission into a full UN peacekeeping operation. He has also called for additional international support and announced the deployment of 600 more Kenyan officers to bolster the mission. The MSS, backed by the United Nations Security Council, aims to address the gang violence and insecurity in Haiti.
