Jake Paul Defeats Mike Tyson in Record-Breaking Netflix Event, Sets Streaming and Betting Records
Nov 19, 2024, 07:21 PM
Jake Paul secured a unanimous decision victory over retired boxing legend Mike Tyson in a highly anticipated bout broadcast on Netflix, which shattered multiple records, including becoming the most-streamed global sporting event ever, according to the streaming giant. Netflix reported that the event garnered over 108 million live global viewers, with a peak of 65 million concurrent streams worldwide and 38 million concurrent streams in the United States. The fight accounted for 56% of all U.S. TV viewing between midnight and 1 a.m. Despite technical glitches that left some viewers frustrated, Netflix labeled the event a significant success, with analysts describing the issues as a "high-quality problem" that highlights Netflix's potential for live-event viewership. In addition to streaming records, the fight set new benchmarks in betting and live gate revenue. Sportsbooks reported that the Paul-Tyson bout became the most heavily wagered-upon fight in years, breaking combat sports betting records at multiple sportsbooks. BetMGM stated that the fight was "the most bet combat sport in BetMGM history," with Paul's victory resulting in a favorable outcome for bookmakers. The event generated an impressive $18.1 million in ticket sales, making it the highest-grossing combat sports event in Texas and the largest gate for any boxing or MMA event outside of Las Vegas in U.S. history. With 72,300 fans in attendance and an average ticket price of $304, the fight ranks as the ninth-highest boxing gate in U.S. history.
