Biden Reverses Policy, Sends Self-Destructing Mines to Ukraine Amid Criticism
Nov 20, 2024, 04:58 AM
President Joe Biden has authorized the provision of nonpersistent antipersonnel land mines to Ukraine, reversing his own previous policy banning their use and transfer outside the Korean Peninsula. These mines are designed to self-destruct or deactivate, reducing the danger to civilians. The decision aims to bolster Ukraine's defenses against advancing Russian troops but has drawn criticism from arms control groups and members of his own administration due to the risk to civilians. Ukraine has committed to avoiding the use of these mines in densely populated areas. The move follows three years of requests from the Ukrainian government and comes after the recent approval of ATACMS missiles to Ukraine. More than 160 countries have signed an international treaty banning landmines.
