Maryland Secures Full Federal Funding for Key Bridge Reconstruction in Bipartisan Bill, $2 Billion Cost Covered
Dec 18, 2024, 01:28 AM
Maryland has secured full federal funding for the reconstruction of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, as part of a bipartisan year-end spending bill. The funding, which covers 100% of the estimated $2 billion cost, was announced by U.S. Senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen, alongside Representative Kweisi Mfume and Governor Wes Moore. The funding commitment, part of a $100 billion disaster fund, ensures that the bridge, which collapsed on March 26, can be rebuilt as quickly as possible, with federal taxpayers to be reimbursed through insurance payments and litigation. The collapse had previously led to the closure of the Port of Baltimore.
