Poland and U.S. to Open SM-3 Missile Defense Base in Redzikowo in Coming Weeks, Says Foreign Minister Sikorski
Oct 13, 2024, 09:32 AM
Poland will open a missile defense base in Redzikowo in the coming weeks, capable of intercepting Russian missiles targeting the country, according to Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski. The base, located about 100 kilometers from Gdańsk, was agreed upon with the United States and is expected to house SM-3 interceptors. Sikorski confirmed that negotiations ensured the missiles could also shoot down Russian missiles flying towards Poland. The deployment of SM-3s in Poland is part of former President Obama's revised missile defense strategy in Europe, which shifted focus from defending the U.S. under President Bush's plan to defending Europe.
