NYC Unveils $350M Plan to Transform Fifth Avenue in 200-Year Redesign
Oct 17, 2024, 06:10 PM
New York City has unveiled a $350 million plan to transform Fifth Avenue into a premier pedestrian-centered boulevard. The redesign, which is the first significant change in the avenue's 200-year history, will widen sidewalks by 46%, shorten crosswalks, reduce the number of traffic lanes from five to three, and add plantings and lighting for aesthetics and safety. The project aims to make the avenue safer and more enjoyable for pedestrians, who currently make up 70% of its users but have access to less than half of the space. The transformation is expected to be completed by summer 2025 and will cover the stretch between Bryant Park and Central Park. The city has also reached a deal with Fifth Avenue merchants to facilitate this redesign.
