VisitChinese Scientists Cure Type 1 Diabetes in 25-Year-Old Woman, a World First
Sep 26, 2024, 10:52 PM
Chinese scientists have achieved a clinical cure for a type 1 diabetes patient by transplanting islet cells derived from chemically induced pluripotent stem cells (CiPSC-islets). This groundbreaking procedure, published in the journal Cell, marks a world first. A 25-year-old woman with type 1 diabetes began producing her own insulin less than three months after receiving the stem cell transplant. She is the first person with the disease to be treated using cells extracted from her own body. The treatment has reversed her diabetes for more than a year. The study, highlighted by Nature, suggests that future research may explore the possibility of observing the effects without immune-suppressing drugs.
