FCC Proposes Cybersecurity Measures, $5B Request After Salt Typhoon Hack
Dec 9, 2024, 09:54 PM
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has proposed measures for U.S. telecom carriers to strengthen cybersecurity risk management plans or face penalties following reports of a hacking operation by the Chinese group Salt Typhoon. The group is said to have infiltrated at least eight U.S. telecommunications companies. FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel has also requested $5 billion to replace Huawei and ZTE telecommunications equipment in the U.S. A bipartisan classified briefing on the matter, involving Rosenworcel and Laura Galante, Director of the Cyber Threat Intelligence Integration Center, is scheduled for Tuesday to address Salt Typhoon and telecommunications security. U.S. agencies are also set to brief the House of Representatives on the hacking incident.
