A devastating series of landslides in southern Ethiopia has resulted in a significant loss of life. Local authorities reported that at least 229 people have been killed due to heavy rains that triggered the landslides in the remote Gofa zone. The disaster began with an initial landslide on Monday morning, which buried several residents. A second landslide occurred shortly after, engulfing those who had gathered to assist in rescue efforts. The death toll has been rising as search operations continue, with many victims being pulled from the mud. The Ethiopian government and local officials have warned that the number of casualties could increase further as the search for survivors and bodies continues. The state broadcaster initially reported the death toll at 157, while local government officials had earlier reported 146 deaths.
