West Bengal Assembly Unanimously Passes Aparajita Anti-Rape Bill
Sep 3, 2024, 08:46 AM
The West Bengal Legislative Assembly has unanimously passed the 'Aparajita Woman and Child (West Bengal Criminal Laws Amendment) Bill, 2024,' commonly referred to as the anti-rape bill, through a voice vote. Introduced by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Law Minister Moloy Ghatak, the legislation aims to strengthen protections for women and children against sexual offences. The bill proposes quick investigation, fast justice delivery, and enhanced punishment, including the death penalty for severe cases. The bill received full support from the opposition, with Mamata Banerjee calling it a historic legislation. Intense discussions took place during the special session, making West Bengal the first state to amend central laws related to rape, gang-rape, and sexual assault. The legislation was tabled in response to the recent rape and murder of a woman doctor at the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College.
