The shrine, a significant pilgrimage site for Shia Muslims, was targeted by a cell of ISIS fighters, who were arrested before they could execute their plan. Four individuals were apprehended in connection with the plot. This incident marks another attempt by ISIS to target religious sites in Syria, following previous attacks on the same shrine.
