Susan Smith Denied Parole After 30 Years in Prison for Killing Her Sons
Nov 20, 2024, 05:36 PM
Susan Smith, a South Carolina woman convicted in 1995 of murdering her two young sons by rolling her car into a lake with them strapped inside, appeared before a parole board on Wednesday to request her release after serving 30 years in prison. At the time of the crime in 1994, Smith initially claimed that a Black man had carjacked her and abducted her children, a false accusation that garnered significant media attention before she confessed to the killings. Now 53, Smith expressed remorse during her first parole hearing, stating that she has become a Christian and believes God has forgiven her. Her ex-husband, David Smith, attended the hearing to oppose her release, noting that she has never apologized to him and asserting that he will attend every future parole hearing to ensure she remains incarcerated. The parole board unanimously denied her parole, and she will be eligible to apply again in two years.
