After Supreme Court Criticism, CAQM Deploys Flying Squads to Tackle Stubble Burning
Oct 3, 2024, 06:31 AM
The Supreme Court of India has criticized the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), as well as the Centre, Haryana, and Punjab, for failing to curb stubble burning, a major contributor to air pollution in Delhi and the National Capital Region. The court noted that the CAQM had "made no effort to implement its direction to stop stubble burning," stating that "only meetings and discussions take place" and there was "no change in pollution on ground." It urged authorities to "go beyond fines" and "act on violators" to address the persistent issue. In response to the Supreme Court's reprimand, the CAQM deployed flying squads to monitor and check stubble burning activities by farmers in Punjab and Haryana.
