Starlink, with FCC Approval, Delivers Direct-to-Cell Connectivity to Hurricane Helene-Hit Regions
Oct 6, 2024, 02:40 PM
SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet service is providing critical communication support in areas devastated by Hurricane Helene, notably in North Carolina, East Tennessee, and Georgia. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has granted emergency authorization for SpaceX and T-Mobile to activate Starlink's direct-to-cell capability, enabling satellite connectivity for cell phones in affected regions. Elon Musk has donated 72 Starlink kits to the State of Georgia to help restore internet connectivity for residents impacted by the hurricane. Private teams, including one led by documentary filmmaker Robby Starbuck, have been deploying Starlink terminals and supplies, totaling over $31,000 in equipment, to some of the hardest-hit and remote areas, significantly aiding emergency services and first responders. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol reported that Starlink is the only reason they can connect with their convoy. A message from a SpaceX HR leader highlighted that Starlink's efforts during the hurricane were inspiring. The rapid deployment of Starlink is transforming post-hurricane recovery efforts by restoring high-speed internet access and supporting critical communication needs.
