After Meeting with Trump, Speaker Johnson Seeks to Block Ethics Report on AG Nominee Gaetz
Nov 15, 2024, 05:08 PM
After meeting with President-elect Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson announced that he will strongly request the House Ethics Committee not to release their report on former Representative Matt Gaetz, who has been nominated as Attorney General. Johnson stated, "I'm going to strongly request that the Ethics Committee not issue the report because that is not the way we do things in the House, and I think that would be a terrible breach of protocol, tradition, and the spirit of the rule." Gaetz had been under investigation by the Ethics Committee prior to his resignation from Congress. Johnson's stance marks a reversal from his earlier comments and has raised concerns about transparency and precedent, as the House has previously released ethics reports on former members.
