Spain to Implement Single Ticket for Bus and Train by 2026, Renfe to Adopt Aena Model
Jan 9, 2025, 01:10 PM
Spain's Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, has announced plans to introduce a single ticket for public transport across the country by 2026. The initiative aims to simplify and modernize Spain's mobility system, drawing inspiration from similar systems already in place in countries like Germany and Austria. The single ticket will cover both bus and train services nationwide, excluding high-speed and long-distance trains. Puente highlighted the need for collaboration between the central government and regional authorities to implement this measure effectively. Additionally, Puente suggested transforming Renfe into a model similar to Aena, hinting at a potential partial privatization of the public rail operator. He also mentioned the appointment of Álvaro Fernández Heredia, currently the Secretary General of Sustainable Mobility, as the new president of Renfe, following the departure of Raül Blanco.
