NASA Supports SpaceX's Starlink Proposal for 400 Satellites at 300 km, Addressing 6,500 LEO Satellites and Hurricane Helene Impact
Oct 29, 2024, 09:08 PM
NASA has expressed support for SpaceX's proposal to deploy Starlink satellites at lower altitudes, specifically 300 kilometers, which is 200 kilometers closer to Earth than their current operational range. This initiative aims to enhance service quality and reduce latency for users. As part of the study, NASA has indicated that SpaceX could operate up to 400 satellites in this new orbit for a duration of 60 days. This move comes amid ongoing discussions at the FCC regarding the environmental impacts of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite launches, particularly concerning the existing 6,500 Starlink satellites. Additionally, Starlink has recently expanded its service to areas such as the National Radio Quiet Zone in Virginia and West Virginia, following a three-year collaboration with U.S. scientists to mitigate wireless signal restrictions. The service has also proven beneficial for military personnel aboard the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, enhancing morale during their recent deployment in the Red Sea. Furthermore, in rural North Carolina, Starlink has played a crucial role in restoring internet access to local businesses affected by Hurricane Helene.
