South Korea to Ban Dog Farming for Food by 2027, Allocates $75 Million for Rehoming

South Korea has announced a comprehensive plan to ban the farming of dogs for food by early 2027. The government will assist in rehoming nearly 500,000 dogs bred for food and provide subsidies and incentives to dog farmers to help them transition away from the practice. The Ministry of Agriculture stated that a total of 100 billion won ($75 million) will be allocated for this initiative. This move aims to eliminate the dog meat industry in the country, with significant financial support to ensure a smooth transition for those affected. Additionally, a compensation plan for dog meat farmers will be implemented to address the ban on dog meat consumption.
