Somalia, Ethiopia End Somaliland Dispute via Ankara Process
Dec 12, 2024, 09:04 AM
Somalia and Ethiopia have agreed to end their nearly year-long dispute over the Somaliland region following mediation by Turkey through the Ankara Process. The agreement was announced in Ankara, where Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan hosted the leaders of both nations, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. The dispute arose after Ethiopia signed a memorandum of understanding with the breakaway Somaliland region in January, seeking sea access. The Ankara Process, initiated by Turkey, has been instrumental in resolving the crisis, with Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan highlighting the eight months of diplomatic efforts led by President Erdogan. The agreement is seen as a historic step towards peace, stability, and prosperity in the Horn of Africa, with both countries expressing gratitude for Turkey's mediation efforts.
